Objectives
All language learners have the potential to succeed in attaining the level of language proficiency required for their work, study, leisure and personal enrichment.
Our English Department aims to offer opportunities to our students to use English for purposeful communication both inside and outside the classroom. Our tailored, school-based curriculum provides the students with learning experiences that develop not only their subject knowledge and skills, but also their critical thinking, expression and creativity.
We promote learner independence and the values and attitudes conducive to effective, independent and lifelong learning so as to enhance their personal and intellectual development, cultural understanding and global competitiveness.
Activities
The school-based English language curriculum enables our students’ use of English both in context and in action.
The junior form language arts, reading and phonics, plus the language across the curriculum initiative with different subjects all provide interesting learning experiences while consolidating the students’ language foundation and helping them bridge to the senior secondary curriculum.
The senior English curriculum offers a variety of language learning experiences to further develop the students’ proficiency through short stories, poems and songs. In addition, the senior curriculum language learning with knowledge and concern over current issues and workplace communication prepares them to become strong, thoughtful, compassionate and informed world citizens.
There are ample opportunities for our students to pursue English in an authentic environment, through our various clubs such as the English Club, the English Debate Club, the English Drama Club and the English Songs Appreciation Club and the English-rich activities such as the English Assemblies and the English Activity Days and English Fun Days.
Through the use of English, our students can broaden their horizons over current affairs and nurture intercultural understanding through their participation in activities and programmes such as the English announcements and lunchtime sharing, the school English newspaper KYC Post and the intercultural exchange experiences with our sister school in Canada, the Niagara Christian Community of Schools (NCC).
